My radio alarm clock clicked on and I lay there, staring up at the vaulted white ceiling, dreading my day.
It was all I could do to muster up the energy to get out of bed, shower, and make an extra strong cup of coffee for the drive to a job that was sucking the life out of me. I had some fantastic duty stations as a Naval Officer, but this one, involving a mountain of paperwork and a boss who required “face time” as a means of control was killing me.
I wasted three precious years of my life, three years I’ll never get back, dragging myself into that job I detested, working for someone whose intelligence and leadership skills left much to be desired. I was simply putting in time, enduring my days until I could go do something else.
Three years of pointless, paper-pushing work for limited money and no reward. If it weren’t for my awesome lunchtime power-walking partner, I never would have made it through with my sanity intact.
In the old days, sailors would make and wear a “short-timers chain” as they drew closer to their date of release. Each day they’d remove a link, shortening the chain one day at a time.
With six months still to go, I made one out of paper clips and relished each day I could remove a clip and inch toward the day I was no longer forced to endure a job that was killing my soul.
My next job, however, brought me full circle.
I was teaching at the Center for Naval Leadership and began to study personal vision and its effects on intrinsic motivation. The subject was so fascinating to me I wound up writing my master’s thesis on the topic and applying many of its principles in our leadership program.
I began to realize life and work could be so much more meaningful and fulfilling and I was determined to make that happen for myself.
I’d lived my whole life like the ball in a pinball machine, just bumping into things and going in the direction they sent me.
I knew I didn’t want the rest of my life to just be a series of simply doing the next thing that came along. I wanted to consciously and deliberately map out my ideal future – not what was probable, but what was possible…maybe even what seemed impossible – and then go after that with gusto.
And that’s exactly what I did.
I successfully transitioned to more meaningful work and generated my own source of income based on my knowledge, expertise, and passions instead of my time.
It was liberating!
I was finally able to live by my rules, my hours, and my dress code. There’s something pretty sweet about working from home in your slippers on a brisk winter morning.
If you’re exhausted by your current situation and are actively seeking a way to create more meaningful work and rewarding income, please don’t waste anymore time waiting for fate to make it all better.
You are a strong, powerful, mighty woman of God who is here to do more than waste your years, putting in time, day after day for a boss or a company that doesn’t appreciate you. Life is going by awfully fast. Before you know it, you’ll be so far down the road you’ll have forgotten what it was you dreamed about in the first place.
You have been designed and created for greatness.
You are not meant to be mediocre. Instead of an organization paying you for your time, and ignoring your true gifts, you could choose to work for yourself making your own rules and hours, generating your own income, and embracing your God-given gifts and talents as a way of helping others and making a bigger impact.
What if you made a living from what you know, not just how often you show up?
If you’re stifled in the wrong job, and know deep in your heart you need a change, but you have no idea how to make that happen, it can be a very scary, lonely place. But it doesn’t have to be. I’ve done it, and so can you.
Let me guide you through my 5-step system for discovering passion, meaning, and purpose in your life and then structuring a way to be financially rewarded for your expertise.
I’ll help you discover a way out of logging time in a system that doesn’t listen and doesn’t change no matter how hard you work.
You can learn to put everything you know to work for you, and not someone else, so you can finally enjoy the time and financial freedom you crave before it’s too late.
If this speaks to you, go here and tell me about your situation. We’ll schedule a quick phone call where we can just get-acquainted and see if working together might be a good fit.
I’m headed out the door for a morning stroll with my Westie, Tess, and then I am going to yoga. Living this lifestyle is a dream come true – I hope you’ll join me!
